Destination: Hungary Vacations

Hungary is a great survivor of history. States and empires around it emerged, and disappeared. However, more than 1,500 castles, palaces and manor houses built in Hungary are extant. Here 2000-year-old Roman ruins and 400-year-old Turkish monuments are found side-by-side, plus Gothic and Baroque buildings, and a rich Art Nouveau heritage. Hungary's Lake Balaton is the largest in Central Europe and therapeutic mineral springs dot the nation. The "puszta" (Great Hungarian Plain).is abounding in Hungarian folk art, horse shows, lifestyle and traditions. The land's music history includes Liszt. Bartok and Kodaly, and, part of the culture, the traditional dish: the goulash. Hungary's capital, Budapest, is the "Pearl of the Danube". The city's wonderful panorama, on UNESCO's World Heritage list, is a unique view of architectural styles and structures, cafés, baths, and culture. 237 monuments, 223 museums and galleries, 35 theatres, 2 opera houses, 12 concert halls, the largest functioning synagogue and old-fashioned customs and courtesies like kissing of hands. St. Stephen, Hungary's first king said: "extend a benevolent protection and respect towards newcomers, so that they would rather stay with you."
