The Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy, bordered by the North Sea, Belgium, and Germany. The country is often referred to by the name Holland, a term partly correct, as only two of the country's twelve provinces are called Holland. A densely populated and geographically low-lying country, popularly known for its windmills, dikes, cheese, clogs (wooden shoes), delftware pottery, tulips, bicycles and pragmatic, live-and-let-live attitude. The country is host to the International Criminal Court at The Hague, the country's capital. Amsterdam, however, a multiracial melting pot, is the big attraction with its picturesque cityscape of canals and 17th-century town houses, drawn to a human scale. Many museums house works by well-known painters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, and van Gogh. Other important cities are Rotterdam and Utrecht. The Netherlands greatest asset is its welcoming inhabitants.
